Lack of balance in the chakras can cause emotional AND physical issues for us. Each chakra influences specific emotional and physical areas in our lives, and in turn can be influenced by things that happen to us.
The base chakra (called muladhara) is located in the lowest part of the abdomen, in the center of the area usually called the perineum. The base chakra is all about our NEEDS, like the lowest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of Needs: food, shelter, clothing, and so forth. Survival. (Some people call this chakra the root chakra, but that is a misnomer. It is the base chakra. The root chakra is actually located at the bottom of your feet when you are standing, about midway between your feet and slightly below them.)
So, things that threaten, or seem to threaten, survival will have an impact on the balance of the muladhara: fear of loss of a job, homelessness, not having enough to eat, not being able to pay the basic bills. Sometimes these things are concrete (if you are literally homeless, for example), and sometimes they are not (if I am fixated on baseless worrying about my job.)
If your base chakra is out of balance for whatever reason, you will develop issues about things like this. You may feel fearful about your security; you may hoard food or money. You may have trust issues and have a hard time developing relationships because you feel that others are out to get you.
In the physical realm, an unbalance in muladhara can result in digestive issues such as constipation, urinary tract problems, lower back pain, or other physical problems tied to the lower part of the abdomen. If you feel disconnected, ungrounded, or unproductive, you may have issues with your base chakra.
There are a variety of ways to work on clearing and balancing the base chakra. This chakra is associated with the color Red, and with the element Earth. Color, sound, energy therapy, and meditation are some possibilities. So, keeping the color red around yourself, and listening to sounds/music that reflect the solidity and permanence of the Earth could be helpful–such things as music with a heavy bass line, or low-pitched drum beats. Also, in the realm of food, eating root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, beets, and others like this can be helpful.
